CLINTON -- Police closed off a stretch of I-78 in both directions as part of an "active investigation" early Saturday morning.

State Police spokesman Capt. Stephen Jones said K9 units and a State Police helicopter had been deployed during a search for "a possible subject."

He declined to comment further on the nature of the investigation. State Police later said in a Facebook post no troopers or civilians had been injured in the incident, and sought to dispel "misinformation" circulating on social media that the search was related to a prison or jail escape.

"We want to make it clear that no troopers or civilians have been injured in the incident being investigated on I-78 in Clinton Township," they wrote. "Additionally, we have received no reports of escapes from any correctional facilities."

The State Police posted on their Twitter account that the highway was blocked off at milepost 19.5, advising drivers to expect major delays.

The state traffic website 511nj.org reported police activity from east of Exit 17 on state Route 31 South in Clinton to Exit 24 on Oldwick Road in Readington Township. As of 8:30 a.m. the site was reporting delays of up to 30 minutes.

Police said there was an accident at the scene at 4:35 a.m.

Numerous people posted on Twitter that they were stuck in standstill traffic.

Drivers began reporting around 9:30 that the highway's eastbound lanes had reopened.
